Saving Lives at Birth: Round 3

USAID, the Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and DFID have joined together to launch Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development, to find the tools and approaches to help the mothers and newborns during their most vulnerable hours. Round 3 applications are due by March 28th, 2013.

Critical Medicines for Maternal Health

A recent expert panel at the Wilson Center discussed the life-saving potential of a core group of medicines- magnesium sulfate, oxytocin, and misprostol, and the need to make these medicines more widely available. According to recent estimates, including a new UN report, this group of medicines could save the lives of more than 70,000 mothers over the next five years.

World Prematurity Day

Prematurity is the leading cause of newborn deaths and second-leading cause of death in children under the age of five, with 15 million babies born too soon and 1.1 million preterm deaths every year. November 17th is the second annual World Prematurity day; a day to reflect and to focus on the global problem of preterm birth. The Healthy Newborn Network has a series of blogs dedicated to the topic of prematurity.
