Application

Control of post-partum hemorrhage

Advantages

  • Convenient: easy of insertion and removable
  • Infection-fighting properties: antimicrobial agents are embedded in the nonwoven matrix
  • Enhanced medicinal benefits for both the mother and newborn: misoprostol can be released to help uterine contraction

Next Steps in Development

  • Develop non-thrombogenic fibers of varying diameters and densities (hollow versus solid fibers)
  • Determine the swelling properties of hollow fibers based on temperature and intrauterine chemical composition environment
  • Develop the protocol for loading/releasing of misoprostol into first a standard polymeric matrix to be translated to selected fiber matrix from steps 1-2. 4. Screen antimicrobial agents for functionalization to the fibers
